Binding design for Howl’s Moving Castle by Diana Wynne Jones, for the House of illustration Competition 2019. This was my third concept for the castle – I wanted it to be a bit different and it’ll be interesting to see which artists made the competition longlist.
edit. I think I missed a trick with the spider imagery in the book – one of the shortlist had the castle walking on spider’s legs which I thought was a great idea. I wanted the castle to hover simply because I didn’t like any of the legs ideas that I came up with, and wheels felt too much like a traction city from Mortal Engines. The shape of the castle was inspired by the shape of a flame – keeping with the theme of Calcifer being reflected in a lot of the designs.
